Z guage is the smallest available model train scale with its
track gauge of only 6.5 mm. Z guage was originally introduced in 1972
by the German model train manufacturer Märklin. The letter "Z" was
chosen to designate the new scale as it was believed that there would
never be a model train scale smaller than Z guage in the future. Today
Z guage, while still considered to be a curiosity by some, is a mature,
modelling scale. However, Z guage is still somewhat less widespread
when compared to the more popular HO guage, O guage, and N guage.
